Apparently, Cancer Man doesn’t work for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, because this may very well be the worst kept secret on the planet: Fox’s The X-Files: Seasons 1-9 Collection (Blu-ray) is now available for pre-order on Amazon Canada with a street date of 12/8 and an Amazon pre-order of $279.99 (Canadian dollars, mind you, which is about $210 USD – SRP is set at $399.99). Better still, Amazon.ca is ALSO showing that each season of the series (see for yourself... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9) will available separately for just $23.09 each (SRP $32.99). So you can either buy the whole smash, or just the seasons you like best! None of these SKUs are listed on Amazon US yet (and USD pricing will be slightly different), but I would expect them to appear very soon. [Read on here…]

Well… Amazon UK has essentially confirmed what we already knew, which is that Brad Bird’s remastered The Iron Giant is coming to Blu-ray soon. Amazon.co.uk has a “To Be Announced” listing for the Blu-ray SKU up. The movie comes back to theaters for event showings tomorrow and Sunday (10/4), so I would expect an official Blu-ray announcement as early as next week. The disc will certainly be available in time for the holidays. It’s kind of the perfect holiday gift title.  [Read on here…]

We’re kicking things off today with another new Blu-ray review. This one is a little unusual and should be more than a little interesting for Star Trek fans: It’s my look at Prelude to Axanar on Blu-ray, the 2014 proof-of-concept short film directed by Christian Gossett and produced by Alec Peters that launched the effort to produce the full Axanar feature film (to be directed by Robert Meyer Burnett and co-written by yours truly). Prelude to Axanar is now available on Blu-ray but ONLY as a perk for contributing $35 to the Axanar IndieGoGo campaign. You won’t find it in stores. But if you love Star Trek on Blu-ray, it’s definitely a title you’re going to want to add to your collections. Be sure to read the review to learn more about it.  [Read on here…]

We’re rounding out the week with a bunch of interesting release news today.

But first, just in case you missed them yesterday, we posted a pair of new Blu-ray reviews on Thursday: My thoughts on Fox’s new The James Bond Ultimate Collection box set and Jim’s take on the 1974 western Billy Two Hats from Kino. Newly posted this afternoon is Jim’s take on A Month in the Country (1987) from Twilight Time and a combo review (from myself and former Bits reviewer Greg Suarez) of Sony’s new Bram Stoker’s Dracula: Supreme Cinema Series Blu-ray, mastered from a new 4K scan of the film. I’m busy working on Blu-ray reviews here at The Bits today, so today’s update is going to be quick. That said, we’ve got a couple cool things for you, plus some interesting release news.

First, our very own Michael Coate has turned in yet another great History, Legacy & Showmanship column today, featuring a look back at TV’s classic Get Smart in celebration of the show’s 50th anniversary! The column offers a great roundtable interview with historians Carl Birkmeyer, Lee Pfeiffer, Paul Scrabo, and Nate Sears. Would you believe… Get Smart has turned 50? The Digital Bits is pleased to commemorate the golden anniversary of the premiere of Get Smart, the classic 60s era comedy series that spoofed the popular secret agent genre. Starring Don Adams as the unforgettable Maxwell Smart and Barbara Feldon as the beautiful and brilliant Agent 99, the series originally ran in prime time from 1965 to 1970 (four seasons on NBC plus an additional season on CBS) and since then has enjoyed a steady syndication and home-video afterlife.  [Read more here...]

The Digital Bits is pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the silver anniversary of the release of GoodFellas, Martin Scorsese’s revered crime drama starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci in an Oscar-winning role.

The film, based upon Nicholas Pileggi’s book Wiseguy and which also starred Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, opened 25 years ago this week.

For the occasion The Bits features a Q&A with a trio of film historians and authors who offer their recollections and insight into the acclaimed film. [Read more here...]
