Boy, we’ve got a nice little bit of news for you all today...

Just a few days ago, I raved about the experience of seeing Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace on the big screen. (You can read my thoughts on the experience here.) Well now, Criterion has just officially announced that it will highlight their June Blu-ray and DVD release slate!

The complete wave of titles includes a BD upgrade of A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, and The Silence – Cat #209-211 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/4, George Stevens’ Swing Time (Cat #979 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/11, Bruno Dumont’s L’humanité (Cat #981 – Blu-ray and DVD) and La vie de Jésus (Cat #980 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/18, John Cameron Mitchell punk musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Cat #982 – Blu-ray and DVD) and – yes – Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace (Cat #983 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/25! You can read more details about those titles here, but for those interested, War and Peace will include the new 2K restoration with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, new interviews (with cinematographer Anatoly Petritsky and filmmaker Fedor Bondarchuk, son of Sergei Bondarchuk), 2 1966 documentaries about the making of the film, a TV program from 1967 (profiling actor Ludmila Savelyeva, and featuring Sergei Bondarchuk), a new program with historian Denise J. Youngblood (Bondarchuk’s War and Peace: Literary Classic to Soviet Cinematic Epic) detailing the cultural and historical contexts for the film, the Janus re-release trailer, a new English subtitle translation, and an essay by critic Ella Taylor. Magnificent news!

We’ve updated the Criterion Spines Project here at The Bits to include these titles, and you can see the cover artwork below. (The 4K titles shown are available for pre-order now on Amazon. We’ll add the Criterion pre-order links as soon as they’re available.)...

War and Peace (Criterion Blu-ray Disc) Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Criterion Blu-ray Disc) Swing Time (Criterion Blu-ray Disc)

A Film Trilogy by Ingrid Bergman (Criterion Blu-ray Disc) L’humanité (Criterion Blu-ray Disc) La vie de Jésus (Criterion Blu-ray Disc)

Backdraft (4K Ultra HD) Hellboy II (4K Ultra HD) Godzilla (1989) (4K Ultra HD)

Also today, in a little piece of film industry news, Disney has just officially rehired James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3. You can read more on that here at Deadline Hollywood.

So there you go. Not bad for a Friday.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned!
