We’re back!

Sorry for the absence of news posts over these last few days, folks. It’s been a busy and chaotic week here at The Bits—not so much work wise, but personal life. Our family’s had a flurry of doctors appointments (all routine, thanks goodness, but still disruptive) and I’ve had to run a car in for servicing. Man, I hate it when real life intrudes on my 4K disc time! Anyway, things seem to be settling down, so it’s time to catch up on news, and then I’ll be working on some new disc reviews myself over the coming days as well.

First though, we do have a couple of reviews to share with you from the team, including...

Tim’s look at Tarsem Singh’s The Cell (2000) in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video—something of a complicated title to review, given its unique production characteristics, as well as the fact that Arrow implemented a disc replacement program.

And Stephen’s thoughts on Robert Wise’s The Andromeda Strain (1971) in 4K Ultra HD, also from Arrow Video, a terrific sci-tech thriller adapting Michael Crichton’s influential 1969 novel of the same name.

Stuart has taken a look at Bruce David Klein’s Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story (2024) on Blu-ray from Atlas Media and Zeitgeist Films via Kino Lorber.

And Stephen has offered his thoughts on John Erick Dowdle’s As Above, So Below (2014) on limited edition Blu-ray from our friends down at Via Vision Entertainment.

We’ve reviewed the disc here as you know, and it’s fantastic. We’ve got several new 4K and Blu-ray reviews for you all to enjoy today, including...

Stephen’s exhaustive and in-depth take on David Fincher’s Panic Room (2002) in 4K Steelbook from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, as well as his thoughts on Peter R. Hunt’s Shout at the Devil (1976) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, and also Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce (1985) in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video in the UK. And for the record, I think Stephen’s take on Panic Room is right on the money and well worth reading for 4K enthusiasts. (Especially you young whippersnappers who seem to think a 4K disc must be absolutely reference quality to have any value—gather ‘round, Professor Bjork is teaching class.)

My review of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) in 4K Ultra HD from Italy’s Eagle Pictures via their 4Kult line, a disc that features an encode optimized for a 100GB disc (and which is a notable improvement over the Paramount Presents 4K release).

Dennis thoughts on Carl Reiner’s Summer Rental (1985) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And finally Tim’s look at the excellent Tom and Jerry: The Complete CinemaScope Collection on Blu-ray from our friends at the Warner Archive Collection.

In announcement news today, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has now confirmed that non-Steelbook 4K versions of all the recent Clint Eastwood titles are due on 4/15 as well, including Dirty Harry (1971), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Pale Rider (1985). It looks like all three films will feature new Dolby Atmos mixes with HDR10 high dynamic range. You can see the Amaray covers below the break. [Read on here...]

Now then, the big release news today is that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has just officially announced a 4K title we first told you has been in the works since 2021. And though it was delayed by developments around the planned sequel (which is now expected to start shooting in 2025), we can finally report that Francis Lawrence’s Constantine (2005) is officially coming to 4K Ultra HD and 4K Digital on 2/18! All right, we have another Lionsgate/Tarantino 4K update for you today, but first we also have more new disc reviews to share with you...

Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Robert Wynne-Simmons’ The Outcasts (1982) in a new Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-ray from Deaf Crocodile Films, as well as Disney and Marvel’s Loki: The Complete Second Season in 4K UHD Steelbook.

I’ve offered my thoughts on Lee Isaac Chung’s recent sequel Twisters (2024) in 4K Ultra HD from Universal.

And Dennis has offered a look at Christopher Guest’s For Your Consideration (2006) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection, as well as the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men (2007) on Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection.

More reviews will follow tomorrow and throughout the rest of the week.

Now then, Lionsgate has indeed officially announced Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, Kill Bill: Volume 1, and Kill Bill: Volume 2 today for 4K Ultra HD release on 1/21. There will be Lionsgate Limited-exclusive Steelbook editions (SRP around $40) on that day, along with wide-release Amaray versions as well. [Read on here...]

My take on Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon (1937) in 4K Ultra HD from Sony’s excellent new Frank Capra at Columbia Collection box set, which is loaded with great films (20 in all, including 9 of them in 4K). If you’re a fan of Capra’s work, it’s definitely a must-have release.

Also today, Sam has taken a look at Robert M. Young’s Triumph of the Spirit (1989)—which features Willem Dafoe, Robert Loggia, and Edward James Olmos—on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Dennis has offered his thoughts on Mario Garcia’s The Throwback (2023) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber proper.

All three films are worth a look, and we have a few more reviews coming tomorrow, including a look at the new 4K Ultra HD release of Ron Howard’s Willow from Lucasfilm.

Now then, in terms of catalog announcement news, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has once again won the day by announcing that they’re releasing David Fincher’s The Social Network (2010) on 4K Ultra HD in Steelbook packaging on 2/18. This is in addition to Panic Room, which was announced yesterday. Note that this film was available previously from the studio in 4K, specifically in the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 2 box set back in 2021. [Read on here...]

I’ve just posted my thoughts on Ahsoka: The Complete First Season in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook format from Lucasfilm, which (like all of the latest wave of Disney+ titles, now includes Dolby Vision HDR). And yesterday, I reviewed Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) in a new 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K box set release from Paramount.

Sam has shared his take on Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1989) in a new Shout Select Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD release from Shout! Factory.

Dennis has reviewed James Ivory’s Roseland (1977) on Blu-ray from the Cohen Film Collection via Kino Lorber.

And yesterday, Tim posted his look at Arrow’s When Titans Ruled the Earth box set, which includes Louis Letterier’s Clash of the Titans (2010) and Jonathan Liebesman’s Wrath of the Titans (2012) in 4K UHD, as well as Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ Monk: Season Four on Blu-ray.

Afternoon, everyone! We’ve got a bunch of good release news to report today, but first we have a trio of new disc reviews to share with you, including...

My take on Chris Sanders’ stunning The Wild Robot (2024) in 4K Ultra HD from DreamWorks Animation.

Stephen’s look at the Disney+ streaming series Hawkeye: The Complete First Season (2021) in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook from Marvel.

And Tim’s review of Lau Kar-leung’s Return to the 36th Chamber (1980) on Blu-ray from Arrow’s excellent Shawscope: Volume Two box set.

Also, just to let you guys know, we have a ton of disc reviews in the works for the coming weeks. I myself have just spent the entire weekend reviewing disc, including The Wild Robot (linked above) but also the new Interstellar: 10th Anniversary Release, Ahsoka, Lost Horizon, and more. Now then... the big news today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially set Kelly Marcel’s Venom 3: The Last Dance for Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook on 2/21. The 4K SKUs will feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include a host of video-based features as follows: Deleted & Extended Scenes, Venomous Laughs: Outtakes & Bloopers, Bonded in Chaos: Tom Hardy, Author of Mayhem: From Writer to Director, Venom’s Inner Circle, Venom Unleashed: The Action & Stunts, Select Scene PreVis, One Last Dance – Tom Morello x Grandson Music Video, Savor the Last Bite: The Venom Legacy, and Brock Bottom: Mrs. Chen Interview. We have a big new disc review for you here at The Bits: Stephen has just taken an in-depth look at the Japanese-import version of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One (2023) in 4K Ultra HD from Toho. I should not there that there are no English subtitles, but the package is pretty spectacular.

We don’t yet know when the film will be released on disc here in the States, but we’re digging into it and hope to learn more soon.

Discovery Home Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have officially set Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 6/11, with the Digital release expected on 5/14. Both the Blu-ray and 4K will feature Dolby Atmos. [Read on here...]

Over the weekend, Stephen posted his thoughts on Disney+ and Marvel’s new release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season (2024) in 4K Ultra HD. He’s also given Riccardo Freda’s The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (1962) a review in 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome.

Not to be outdone, Tim has reviewed Hanna-Barbera’s animated The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones (1987) on Blu-ray from our friends at the Warner Archive Collection, as well as Paul Leni’s The Cat and the Canary (1927) on Blu-ray from Eureka Entertainment.
