As always, we’re kicking things off this week with some new disc reviews...

Dennis has checked in with a look at Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter on Blu-ray from Focus Films and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

And Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Joe Carnahan’s Copshop on Blu-ray from Open Road Films and Universal.

Now let’s have some release news...

Continuing the theme of Kino Lorber Studio Classics kicking ass with catalog 4K, the company has just set their Ultra HD release of David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises (2007) for 3/22, featuring a brand new Dolby Vision color grade approved by cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and a new interview with screenwriter Steven Knight. You can see the cover artwork above-left.

Paramount has officially announced its 30th anniversary Blu-ray Steelbook release of Wayne’s World on 2/1. There’s no indication that the disc has been remastered or features new extras. [Read on here...]

We’ve got some interesting announcement news for you today...

First up, Paramount has just set Robert Altman’s Popeye (1980) for release on Blu-ray Disc on 12/1, just in time for the film’s 40th anniversary (on 12/6). No kidding! The film stars Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Paul L. Smith, and Paul Dooley.

From the press release: “The new Blu-ray includes access to a Digital copy of the film, along with nearly 30 minutes of all-new bonus content featuring excerpts from one of Robin Williams’ final interviews, an interview with director Robert Altman from 2014, as well as a newly conducted interview with Stephen Altman.”

Those extras will include 4 featurettes (Return to Sweethaven: A Look Back with Robin and the Altmans, The Popeye Company Players, Popeye’s Premiere, and The Sailor Man Medleys) and the film’s theatrical trailer. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got a big update for you today, with lots of news, a few rumors, and some announcements too. But first...

I’ve just posted my in-depth review of Shout! Factory’s long-awaited Space: 1999 – The Complete Series Blu-ray set, which marks the first time Year Two of the series has been available on the format here in the States. It includes all 48 remastered episodes (sourced from the recent Network remaster) with a bunch of legacy extras and some good new content too. You’ll find that here.

Also here at The Bits today, we’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List with some new titles that we have reason to believe are coming (more on that in a minute), along with pre-orders for a couple of titles we’ve already confirmed are coming (Men in Black International and more). We also have a street date for Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 from our retail sources (tentatively look for it on 9/24). [Read on here...]

Scream for a Week – November 23, 2016

Welcome to our newest column additionScream for a Week!

We here at The Digital Bits are big fans of Shout!’s Scream Factory division and, not unlike Todd Doogan’s Criterion Spines Project, we wanted to cover Scream Factory’s releases by catching up on a bunch that we’ve missed while acknowledging the previous ones. We’ll also be covering new ones here as well. This column will go up on a bi-weekly basis, so be sure to check back in another two weeks for another pile of Scream Factory goodness.

First up is Beneath, a Larry Fessenden giant fish movie that I’m actually a little less hard on than I was when I originally wrote the review. Today, I’d probably give it more of a B or a B- as it’s grown on me since then. New to Blu-ray this week are both Rabid and Dead Ringers, a pair of David Cronenberg movies that are stacked with some great extras worth digging into. Also new, at least as far as catching up with older Scream Factory titles is concerned, is The Monkey’s Paw, a Chiller movie that actually has some merit. And last but not least, Paul Schrader’s terrific remake of Cat People. [Read on here…]

We’ve got a bunch of interesting announcement news for you today, to close out the week, but first we have another new Blu-ray review: Tim has posted his Pick-Ups thoughts on Joe Giannones’ 1982 slasher Madman, now available on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome. Do give it a look.

All right, let’s get to the announcements...

We start with Disney, which has just set the live action Pete’s Dragon for release on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and Disney Movies Anywhere on 11/29. There’s no Blu-ray 3D version announced, which probably means that one will be released next year (following the pattern with Disney’s recent The Jungle Book and Star Wars: The Force Awakens).  [Read on here…]
