Universal sets The Office: The Complete Series for Blu-ray in November, plus Blade Runner 2019 & more release news

by

All right, we’re working on reviews here at The Bits today, so the news post is going to be a quick one.

First things first: Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just set The Office: The Complete Series for release on Blu-ray Disc on 11/10. The SRP on Amazon is current listed as $119, but we expect their usual discount to be added soon.

What’s interesting about this is that the show has become a hit among Millennials especially during COVID isolation, with Netflix and other streaming services featuring it prominently. But it’s not only Millennials—my wife and I had never watched it when it was on NBC and we binged it a few months ago on recommendation from fellow Gen-X friends who had just done the same.

Hats off to Universal for noticing this trend and taking advantage of it. I’m sure there are LOTS of fans who would love to have it in HD on disc. So now’s your chance. [Read on here...]

In other news, for fans of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, GKids and Shout! Factory are releasing Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky as new Blu-ray Steelbook editions on 12/15. Also coming that day is GKids and Shout!’s Blu-ray edition of Goro Miyazaki’s From Up on Poppy Hill (SRP $19.98). Similarly, their Steelbook BD editions of Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro are due on 10/20.

Vinegar Syndrome has set Amityville: It’s About Time, Amityville: A New Generation, Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes, Amityville: Dollhouse, and Memorial Valley Massacre for release on Blu-ray on 10/27.

And don’t forget that El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is coming to Blu-ray finally on 10/13.

Finally today, I wanted to recommend a pair of comic book releases for fans of Blade Runner: Titan Comics has recent published the first two (of three—the third volume comes out in February) collected editions of Blade Runner 2019: Los Angeles and Off-World. They tell a new story that begins roughly concurrent with the events of the original film, then jumps ahead several years. And it’s written by Michael Green, the co-writer (with Hampton Fancher) of Blade Runner 2049. I’ve read both now and they’re pretty terrific. In fact, I think—using the new Unreal engine/volume technology that makes The Mandalorian possible—you could make a pretty dam good one-season streaming series out of this story on HBO Max. In any case, you can find them on Amazon here and here and I can’t recommend them more highly for Blade Runner fans. Here’s what they look like...
