We’ve just spent the whole day working on a brand new History, Legacy & Showmanship column from our own Michael Coate, featuring a look back at the original 1977 theatrical release of Star Wars, in anticipation of this week’s long-anticipated release of The Force Awakens. Michael has produced an exhaustively-researched chronicle of the film’s debut theatrical run, featuring trivia, period review quotes, and a listing of all the original theatrical engagements around North America. He even rounds the column out with a great roundtable interview featuring historian and author Marcus Hearn (The Cinema of George Lucas), filmmaker Patrick Read Johnson (5-25-77), filmmaker and special edition producer Charles de Lauzirika (Crave, and most recently documentary content for Disney’s Star Wars Launch Bay exhibit), and filmmaker Kevin Rubio (Troops). All right, we’re kicking things off today with a new Blu-ray review from Jim Hemphill, featuring a look at the 1989 Vietnam war film The Siege of Firebase Gloria, which streeted today on disc from Kino Lorber.

Also, Tim Salmons has launched another batch of Pick-Ups Blu-ray reviews this week with his thoughts on Scream Factory’s The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. The Blu-ray streets on 12/22.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a few things for you today...

First, I’ve posted a new Blu-ray review of the Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways recently released by RCA. This is the 8-episode series that aired on HBO earlier this year. I’ll have a few more new BD reviews for you this week, including Warner’s Mad Max: Fury Road (possibly as soon as tomorrow), so be sure to check back.

Also today, Tim has posted a new installment of his Pick-Ups column, featuring the first two of several new Scream Factory horror Blu-ray reviews – Ghost Town and Stigmata. He’ll have more each day all this week.  [Read on here…]

In this week’s installment of Pick-Ups, we’re going to catch up on some more recent Scream titles on Blu-ray.

It should go without saying that we’re big fans of Scream Factory here at The Digital Bits. It’s terrific that they seem to have helped generate more interest in not just big horror titles, like They Live and Halloween, but also horror movies that tend to have been forgotten over the years. We also appreciate when they debut obscure horror movies that haven’t had a release on Blu-ray before, let alone DVD. Their efforts also encourage other companies to dig deeper for similar titles. First up, our own Jim Hemphill has turned in his thoughts on Twilight Time’s new Blu-ray edition of The Fabulous Baker Boys. Looks like they’ve done a nice job of it, so do give it a look.

Also today, Tim Salmons has turned in a huge new edition of his regular Pick-Ups column, featuring reviews of more than twenty Mystery Science Theater 3000 DVD box sets from Shout! Factory! That’s a whole lotta MST3K, so be sure check it out if you’re a fan. [Read on here…]

Being a big fan of the cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000, I decided that it was time for The Bits to have all of the wonderful boxed sets available from Shout! Factory in our database. [Read on here...]

We’re starting the day with sad news I’m afraid. The legendary British actors Sir Christopher Lee and Ron Moody have both passed away today.

Lee made his name early, playing Count Dracula and other characters for Hammer Films. His Wikipedia page lists appearances in some 206 films, not to mention numerous TV, stage, and even video game roles. Over the years, he’s played Death, both Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, Frankenstein’s Creature, Fu Manchu, Lord Summerisle, and King Haggard. Bond fans will surely remember him as the villain Francisco Scaramanga from The Man with the Golden Gun. Younger Star Wars prequel fans were likely introduced to him as Count Dooku. Of course, his last great role was the wizard Saruman the White in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films. But Lee lived an adventurous life beyond stage and screen as well. He apparently hunted Nazis during world war II as a member of Churchill’s so-called “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” He even recorded a symphonic metal concept album called Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross.
