Shout! licenses Studio Canal’s The Deer Hunter for 4K Ultra HD, plus Color Out of Space & Richard Jewell
So the big news this morning is that Shout! Factory has dropped an out-of-left-field 4K Ultra HD announcement: They’re gotten the US release rights to Michael Cimino’s 1978 Best Picture winner The Deer Hunter. As some of you will know, this was a Studio Canal release last year in the UK on 4K Ultra HD, but there was no U.S. distributor.
Shout! will be releasing it on 5/26 as a Shout Select 4K/Blu-ray Collector’s Edition. SRP is $34.93, but you can pre-order it direct from the Shout website for just $28.43 with an exclusive poster. There will apparently be some new extras, which will be announced at a later date. We have no details yet on HDR or audio specs, but the Studio Canal package included Dolby Vision and HDR10, with 2.0 and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. [Read on here...]
The Musical Goldmine of ’69: Remembering “Paint Your Wagon” on its 50th Anniversary
“Paint Your Wagon is remembered as a standalone oddity in the careers of Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood.” — Matthew Kennedy, author of Roadshow! The Fall of Film Musicals in the 1960s
The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the golden anniversary of the release of Paint Your Wagon, the Oscar-nominated cinematic interpretation of the Lerner and Loewe stage musical which starred Lee Marvin (Cat Ballou, Point Blank), Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry, Unforgiven) and Jean Seberg (Pendulum, Airport).
Paint Your Wagon — directed by Joshua Logan (South Pacific, Camelot) and which also featured Harve Presnell (The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Fargo) and Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) — opened 50 years ago this month. For the occasion, The Bits features an historical reference listing of the film’s major-market roadshow engagements and a Q&A with film historian Matthew Kennedy, who discusses the film’s virtues, shortcomings and legacy. Warner sets Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven for 4K Ultra HD, plus Pioneer makes their new PC 4K UHD drive official
Good afternoon, folks! We’ve just posted a pair of new Blu-ray reviews here at The Bits, starting with Tim’s take on John Brahm’s The Mad Magician, now available on Blu-ray 3D from Twilight Time. It’s an overlooked Vincent Price gem.
I’ve also posted my two cents on Mamoru Oshii’s classic anime Ghost in the Shell (1995), newly-reissued on Blu-ray by Starz/Anchor Bay in exclusive Mondo Steelbook packaging to take advantage of the live action remake’s debut in theaters.
Also, we’ve just posted the weekly Release Dates & Artwork section update with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, a portion of anything you order from Amazon after clicking to them through our links goes to help support our work here at The Bits and we appreciate it enormously. So thank you! First up, our own Tim Salmons has just kicked off his latest installments of his Dailies: Pick-Ups column. This week, Tim’s going to catch up with a few great Blu-ray titles from our friends at Arrow Video, the first of which is Buddy Cooper’s The Mutilator (1985). Do give it a look. [Read on here…]

We’ve just a quick update for you today here at The Bits, but we do have some new reviews...
Our own Tim Salmons has checked in with a review of the Coen Brothers’ classic Fargo (the new 4K remastered edition) on Blu-ray from Fox and MGM, as well as Fox’s new Fargo: The Complete First Season TV series on BD (at least a little bit more of which actually takes place in Fargo, North Dakota, which is where I’m from). And since we’re on the topic, we thought it would appropriate to upgrade Dr. Jahnke’s fine analysis of Fargo on DVD (from way back in “aught four”) into the new review database as well. Enjoy!
