All right, I’ve finally had a week or so to process my experience of Ultra HD Blu-ray at CES 2016, so I wanted to offer a few thoughts and insights on it all – perspective filtered through my 20 years of experience working in and around this industry here at The Bits.  [Read on here…]

Today’s post here on The Bits is all about Blu-ray reviews…

First up, I’ve finally posted my in-depth thoughts on Fox’s The X-Files: The Complete Seasons 1-9 Blu-ray box set. And by in-depth, I mean in-depth – it’s a 3-pager with everything you’d want to know about the set, its quality and extras, and word of a Fox exchange program for one of the individual season sets. Do give it a read. If you love the series and are interested in the BDs, the better course is to buy the seasons individually and you’ll save money – I’ve included purchase links to all of them (plus the movies) within the review text. Enjoy!  [Read on here…]

Okay, there will be at least a couple updates today as I work to wrap up our coverage of CES 2016. The first is a quick one because of a bit of breaking news: Philips has just announced their own entry into the UHD Blu-ray player market, the BDP7501. It has a smaller form factor that is typical of most BD players, features HDMI 2.0a, 4K upscaling, built-in WiFi, and 4K streaming via Netflix and other digital providers. There’s no price and street date announced yet beyond sub $400 (which probably means $399, making it one of the cheaper offerings) and Spring 2016. Here’s what it looks like...  [Read on here…]

All right, I’m finally back from CES 2016, after three long and exhausting days of running around the show and a harrowing late-night drive back to Southern California amid rain and snow. And I’ve gotten a good long rest to recover from all of the above.

So let’s talk about what I saw related to UHD BD on the show floor Wednesday...  [Read on here…]

I hope you all had a fine holiday weekend! We’re gearing up here at The Bits this week for the impending Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we’ll take a good hard look at Ultra HD Blu-ray and format-related developmentsin 4K. We should hear news of official 4K title announcements, get our first good look at actual consumer players and hardware (including specs and pricing), and learn about studio and CE industry plans for the format’s rollout in February and beyond. So stay tuned over the next couple weeks. It’s going to be pretty interesting, we think.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got kind of a slow news day today, but we do have one thing for you…

Sony has just announced a partnership with Dolby Labs for the use of its Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) mastering process in forthcoming Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases (read the press release here at Business Wire). No titles have been announced yet, but based on the studio’s recent 4K remastering work you can reasonably expect such titles as The Fifth Element, Léon: The Professional, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, American Hustle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fury, Lawrence of Arabia, and more… eventually.  [Read on here…]
