All right, we’ve got some pretty darned good announcement news for you all today...

First up, Ridley Scott’s The Martian is now available for pre-order on Amazon on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD (Amazon price: $44.99, $22.99, and $14.99), set to be released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Our own Tim Salmons is starting things off this afternoon with his Halloween Hangover Blu-ray review for the day, which is a look at Gordon Hessler’s 1969 film The Oblong Box, starring Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. The film is now available on disc from Kino.  [Read on here…]

This is the last week of Tim Salmons’ Halloween Hangover here at The Bits, and he kicks it off with a review of Scott Spiegel’s 1989 Intruder: Director’s Cut, now available on Blu-ray from Synapse Films. First, Tim’s Halloween Hangover review for the day is a look at Pete Walker’s House of Long Shadows (1983), a horror/parody film available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. The film stars Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Desi Arnaz, Jr., and John Carradine.

Also, Jim Hemphill has taken a look at the recent I Spit on Your Grave III: Vengeance is Mine, now available on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay. [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got kind of a slow news day today, but we do have one thing for you…

Sony has just announced a partnership with Dolby Labs for the use of its Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) mastering process in forthcoming Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases (read the press release here at Business Wire). No titles have been announced yet, but based on the studio’s recent 4K remastering work you can reasonably expect such titles as The Fifth Element, Léon: The Professional, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, American Hustle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fury, Lawrence of Arabia, and more… eventually.  [Read on here…]

I had to sit on maybe the biggest movie story in America. For a long time. And now that it’s been completed and is over, I’m shocked that the whole thing hasn’t been on the front page of The New York Times.

I’ve perhaps casually mentioned that I helped create (didn’t get in the way of) a film school here in Oklahoma City, actually at Oklahoma City Community College. The idea was, unlike film degrees that are based on watching and studying themes and points of view and reading scripts, the creative side, so to speak, to offer a technical, hands on degree program, why a community college was selected in the first place. And to enhance the experience, we got the finest equipment in the world – Avid editors and cameras and lenses and lights and then, through a lot of hard work from a lot of good people, here came the ultimate – a full end studio, built to the specs of an actual Hollywood soundstage. If another state funded school has a facility like this, I’d like to see it.  [Read on here...]
