The Book of Henry, Amores Perros, Epson 5040UB projector review, RIP Sam Shepard & more

by

Hey, folks. I’m be back soon with a larger news update soon. We’ve been doing some server work here at The Bits while we’re in a bit of a lull, plus we’ve been doing some review work as well.

Speaking of which, you may have seen it when I posted it yesterday, but I’ve done a long awaited hardware review: Epson’s PowerLite Home Cinema 5040UB 3 LCD projector. I’ve been demoing it here at The Bits for a few months now and it’s pretty extraordinary. It’s not full native 4K, but it accepts 4K video signals, enhances the imagery via “pixel shifting” to make 4K look almost 4K, makes 1080p HD look more like 4K, displays HDR10 and the entire DCI-P3 color space, and it even displays 3D better than you’ll see in many theatres. If you’re into front projector, it’s one of the best and most affordable home cinema projectors you can buy right now. Do give it a look.

Also, Tim has posted several new Blu-ray reviews, including his thoughts on Paramount’s The Naked Gun Trilogy, Arrow Films’ Pulse, Severin Films/Intervision’s Feed the Light, Grindhouse Releasing’s Massacre Mafia Style, Lionsgate’s Warlock Collection, and Warner Archive’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Enjoy! [Read on here…]

I’m also working on a bunch of 4K Ultra HD reviews, which I’ll start posting soon. I’m actually going to a 4K UHD press event tomorrow that I’ll have more to say about on Friday.

In announcement news, Lionsgate is releasing the animated Marvel’s Thor: Tales of Asgard on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/10. The company is also releasing Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Amores Perros on Blu-ray that same day. And they’ve set 47 Meters Down for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 9/26.

Universal has set The Book of Henry for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/3.

The Brain Factory will release the Haunters: The Art of the Scare documentary on Blu-ray on 10/3 as well.

Arrow Video is following up their forthcoming Re-Animator: Limited Edition Blu-ray (due on 8/8) by re-issuing their excellent Bride of Re-Animator: Limited Edition Blu-ray on 9/26 in Steelbook packaging.

Speaking of Steelbooks, Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing Flatliners in that packaging on 9/26.

Also, we need to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of a few stage and screen legends in the last few days, including the acclaimed playwright and actor Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff, Days of Heaven), actress Jeanne Moreau (Jules and Jim, Diary of a Chambermaid), actor Leonard Landy (Our Gang), pioneering Disney Imagineer Marty Sklar (one of the original architects of Disneyland), and voice actress June Foray (voice of Natasha and Rocky the Flying Squirrel from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, Cindy Lou Who from How the Grinch Stole Christmas and more). All will be missed.

Back with more soon. Stay tuned…
