If last week was a slow one for new MOD releases, this week is downright stagnant. There are just two new titles from Warner Archive and they’re this week’s Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. But fans of a certain Boston detective will be happy and, if nothing else, it won’t take you long to read this column.

NEW FROM THE WARNER ARCHIVE COLLECTION

The Bowery Boys: Volume Four (1946-58) – The Boys’ final collection presents twelve features over four discs starring Slip, Sach, Skeets, Duke, Fink and Ole Stinky. I may have made a couple of those names up. Anyway, the movies included in this set are Mr. Hex (1946), Trouble Makers (1948), Triple Trouble (1950), Bowery Battalion (1951), Here Come The Marines (1952), Jungle Gents (1954), Bowery To Bagdad (1955), Spy Chasers (1955), Jail Busters (1955), Fighting Trouble (1956), Hold That Hypnotist (1957) and In The Money (1958). The set also includes 24 rare trailers for the Boys’ flicks.

Spenser For Hire: The Complete First Season (1985-86) – Robert B. Parker’s Boston-based private eye made a successful transition to the small screen thanks to Robert Urich and costar Avery Brooks as the stylish enforcer Hawk. Frankly, I’d assumed this was on DVD already, since I remember this being pretty popular back in the 80s. The first of the show’s three seasons features such guest stars as Chuck Connors, Patricia Clarkson, Angela Bassett, W.H. (not yet William H.) Macy, Frances McDormand, Jimmy Smits, and many more.
